Denzel Washington will play Hannibal!

This is the first big news since the end of the actors' strike in Hollywood: Denzel Washington is going to play Hannibal.

The hero of Equalizer will therefore be the Carthaginian general Hannibal the Conqueror in a new film intended for the Netflix platform. Antoine Fuqua (Equalizer and Training Day, already with Denzel Washington) will direct the epic drama written by John Logan, screenwriter of Gladiator.

Hannibal Barca, the art of war

The upcoming feature film will focus on Hannibal Barca, legendary tactician and leader considered one of the greatest military commanders in world history. The film is expected to feature the battles he fought against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War. He is also and above all known for having invaded Rome while riding a North African war elephant. With his troops, he occupied most of southern Italy for fifteen years before finally being defeated by the Romans at the Battle of Zama.

Note that Denzel Washington was, several years ago, affiliated with a similar project, as was Vin Diesel, who was also considered to play the character in a biopic. Source: Deadline
