An antique accessory could be the future of augmented reality, photo!

A still not quite rough taste of what the future of augmented reality glasses could be.

Augmented reality glasses could be the next mobile revolution, but no device has yet succeeded in convincing the general public.

The Monocle, augmented reality accessory for glasses

In this still little explored territory, the company Brilliant Labs ventures with a functional and commercialized concept (indicative price, $349) that gives a taste of what the future of augmented reality may be.

The Monocle, as its name suggests, takes the form of a huge single round lens. This independent module has the particularity of adapting to any pair of glasses by adding a virtual layer to reality. Clever but a little thick and not necessarily very pretty given all the technologies it must include: 720p camera, 640 × 400 pixel Oled screen, Bluetooth module (to communicate with the smartphone) and battery.

The accessory and its software have the particularity of being open source, meaning that any handyman can improve it and adapt it to their liking. In the hope that this open model will allow significant advances in the field of augmented reality.
