PS VR2 headset, less popular than expected? Sony denies...

Reservations for the new virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5 would be lower than expected at Sony.

According to the Bloomberg agency, which would have it from a well-placed source within the Japanese manufacturer's suppliers, Sony has revised downwards its sales projections for the PS VR2 virtual reality headset, which is scheduled for sale on February 22 next, the fault of a lower reservation figure than that estimated by the manufacturer.

PS VR2 virtual reality headset, Bloomberg warns and Sony denies

Thus, while Sony had planned to distribute two million units for the first quarter of operation of the device, this figure would have been halved and would only be one million. With an overall objective for the next financial year, from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024, of 1.5 million copies sold. High price (549 €) and lack of compatibility with other systems (the PS VR2 only works with the PS5) are the factors cited for this lack of popularity. However - speaking to GamesIndustry.biz - Sony denied Bloomberg's claims, claiming to "observe enthusiasm from PlayStation fans for the upcoming launch", without giving specific figures.

Virtual reality, the consumer still not convinced…

If this readjustment of the production volumes of the PS VR2 were to prove, in addition to the arguments put forward by explaining it, there is another one that is also, or even more, important: the consumer's disinterest in virtual reality. This technology, apart from professional applications, has never succeeded in convincing the general public and the main entertainment players have gradually deserted the market, Google and Microsoft for example. Only Meta is holding on at the cost of huge losses… It remains to be seen whether Sony will be able to create momentum on its PS VR2 headset with, why not, a game phenomenon that will win over everyone.
