Miami Vice ’85: surprising first images

First look at Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Miami Vice ’85. And honestly, we’re wondering whether this is really going to work…

Universal Pictures has just unveiled the first images of Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Miami Vice ’85, Joseph Kosinski’s new film. Two individual posters show the actors as Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett. A sort of cross between Shaft and Don Johnson from the original series that, to say the least, leaves one doubtful about the project’s ambitions.

Miami Vicev deluxe version ?

After remaking Top Gun with bigger means in Maverick, then revisiting Days of Thunder with millions poured into F1, Joseph Kosinski seems decidedly to have a hard time getting out of his comfort zone. His new challenge? To remake the essential Miami Vice with even more means, but without necessarily bringing anything new to it.

Written by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), the screenplay is said to draw on the pilot and the first season of the cult series to explore the glamour and corruption of 1980s Miami through the adventures of two undercover cops. On paper, why not? But judging by these first images, it is hard to imagine anything other than a lavish retread of what has already been done.

Miami Vice Director’s Final Cut version Michael Mann or version Joseph Kosinski ?

Meanwhile, Michael Mann continues to take risks by offering an even more radical version of his 2006 Miami Vice (see Miami Vice: Director’s Final Cut, what changes and what is debated). Clearly, two rooms, two atmospheres.

There is still a particularly large supporting cast, with John Leguizamo, Walton Goggins, Alden Ehrenreich, André Holland, Edi Gathegi, Danny Ramirez, Whitney Peak, Michael Irby, Camila Morrone and Andrew Schulz.

Miami Vice ’85 is expected in U.S. theaters on May 19, 2028.
