Recently unveiled, the new intelligent assistant Siri AI arrives at the end of the year, and Apple assures us that it won't try to become your friend, or anything like that.
The new intelligent assistant Siri AI is arriving this fall on iPhones and other Apple devices (but not in our region, unfortunately), and while its functionality is similar to other chatbots like ChatGPT, its distinguishing feature will be its professionalism. A pro at your service. This is a key point raised by Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, and Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Greg "Joz" Joswiak, during an interview on a recent episode of the Mostly Human podcast. "If you use a lot of existing chatbots, they're really focused on engagement to a significant degree, and on sycophancy, aren't they? They want to kind of draw you in," Federighi explains. "They might encourage you to reveal things about yourself, and then use that as a basis for establishing a connection." "You don't mess with Siri," says Joz. "The way we designed Siri, Siri really means, 'Look, that's not my role. I'm here to help you.' But if you try to approach Siri like a romantic partner, Siri isn't going to be into that at all." Joz adds that Apple's motivation is to help the user, not keep them engaged. The goal is to provide concise answers, and it's up to the user to continue the conversation if they want to.
