Spotify, already 15 years old

At the beginning of October, the leading music streaming platform Spotify celebrated its fifteenth anniversary. The opportunity to look back on his meteoric rise.

On October 7, 2008, Spotify was launched in some European countries. Then an obscure start-up based in Stockholm, Sweden, Spotify is today number one in the world in the music streaming segment. A success story to discover in the fantastic series The Playlist available on Netflix (click on the link to discover the complete AVCesar.com test).

Spotify, market leader in music streaming

A success that would have been difficult to predict at the time, as streaming only represented a small portion of the global music market. In 2013, Spotify had 30 million active users, including 8 million premium subscribers. Today, these figures are 551 million and 220 million respectively. Great progress.

Spotify, still not profitable in 2023

Note, however, that the company is still not profitable. In 2018 when it went public, Spotify announced net losses of 430 million euros for 11.7 billion in turnover. The losses accumulated since 2009 now amount to 4 billion. Perhaps the new Supremium subscription (coming soon?) will manage to reverse the curve. Illustration: Statista
