While it hasn't yet taken a short trip to space, Samsung's smartwatch has been worn by six professional volunteers, isolated for eight days in a test facility, with an environment designed to simulate the physical and psychological effects of a space mission. Total isolation, therefore, no contact with the outside world and simulations of events encountered during this type of travel.

Conducted by the European Space Agency, the German Aerospace Center and the Institute of Aerospace Medicine, the study named SOLIS8 is the first of its kind to use connected watches to monitor the health of participants. Smartwatches were used to track biometric data without requiring an intermediary device (smartphone), even in complicated situations.

According to the initial results, the encryption security and ease of use of connected watches open up new possibilities in space exploration, including remote medicine.
