As speculation around a possible cancellation of the project began to multiply, Peter Safran, co-chairman of DC Studios, had categorically denied this hypothesis at the premiere of Clayface.
We learn today, via Deadline, that Steven Soderbergh will ultimately take over to handle the final weeks of shooting. If Matt Reeves is currently unable to be present on the London set, the two filmmakers will work closely together and remain in contact until filming wraps. Reeves will then take back the reins of post-production as soon as he is able to return.
Steven Soderbergh, an unexpected helping hand
The studio issued the following statement: “As Matt Reeves continues to face a difficult family situation, Steven Soderbergh, an admirer of his work, personally offered his help. With the full support of DC Studios, he will step in to allow the writer and director to complete the final weeks of shooting of The Batman Part II. Matt and Steven will work closely with the cast and crew to bring Matt’s vision for the film to life”
Steven Soderbergh also took the time to explain his approach: “I found Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman remarkable. Every choice was thoughtful, precise, and absolutely rigorous in its consistency. Our goal is to work with Matt and his team to shoot footage that will fit seamlessly with what has already been done, so that he can complete his film as he intends.”

Matt Reeves dispels any ambiguity
For his part, Matt Reeves posted a message on X to dispel any ambiguity: “I want to be perfectly clear: I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am deeply grateful to Steven for coming to my rescue during this difficult time to help me finish filming. Thank you all for your concern and your messages of support.”
That’s all very nice. After missing the Star Wars boat, Soderbergh is now hopping on the Batman train, and in a rather unexpected way. A dream opportunity to finally get to grips with the world of superheroes…
Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch are in the cast.
For now, The Batman Part II is still set for February 18, 2028.
