Nintendo Switch 2: A version with a removable battery confirmed for Europe
08.06.2026 • 09h27
To comply with increasingly stringent European legislation, Nintendo will release a new version of its Switch 2 console next year.
And another rumor confirmed! Nintendo will release a new Switch 2 console in Europe, featuring removable batteries. Strict legislation against planned obsolescence: This release complies with European regulations passed in 2023 and which will take effect in February 2027. The aim of these regulations is to combat the planned obsolescence of electronic devices and facilitate their repair. Thus, all portable electronic devices will be required to have replaceable batteries. An OSM code to identify compliant consoles: "This regulation requires that, from February 18, 2027, batteries integrated into certain devices and sold in the EU must be easily replaceable by end users at any time during the product's lifecycle," explains Nintendo. Nintendo is implementing measures to comply with these requirements by preparing regulatory-compliant product versions. Unlike current products whose model number begins with "BEE," future compliant versions will have unique model numbers as well as the additional code "OSM" visible on the packaging, designating them as distinct products for regulatory purposes.
