Samsung, a patent unveils a concept for a hybrid screen, half brick, half tablet

The undisputed leader in flexible displays, Samsung Electronics continues to push the boundaries of mobile device design. A document recently approved by the US Patent Office brings back into the spotlight a spectacular hybrid device project: a rectangular block-shaped terminal whose multiple sides can both unfold and roll up to transform into a true tablet. A futuristic vision that merges the foldable and rollable technologies of the Korean manufacturer.
Samsung has a habit of filing patents for improbable devices based on its screen technologies. And while most of these belong to the realm of science fiction, some have actually come to fruition, such as the famous three-section smartphone, the Galaxy Trifold.

A crazy project back before the patent office££££

The patent we're interested in was recently published with the US patent office, and it's not new since this parallelepiped had already made headlines in 2019. This recent publication is perhaps a sign that the project is moving forward, despite its highly inventive, almost outlandish concept.

A wraparound screen that unfolds and unrolls££££

Indeed, all the faces of this brick, let's call it that, are covered with a wraparound screen, and the object unfolds to form a small tablet, which becomes even larger since part of the screen is rolled up, and can then unroll further.

Futuristic bedside clock or pure exercise in style? It's hard to see the usefulness of such an object, except perhaps as a very stylish bedside clock that transforms into a beautiful screen for a little treat before bed. And even if it never sees the light of day, we can applaud Samsung for its creativity.
