AV2 video codec: the Alliance for Open Media quietly launches v1.0.0

The Alliance for Open Media (AOM) has just released version 1.0.0 of the AV2 codec, which promises 30% better compression efficiency than AV1, although this open-source successor is still in draft form.
Announced last year by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), AV2 (the second edition of the AV1 compression codec launched in 2018) has been delayed and has only just been released, in a version that is not yet fully developed. Promising 30% bandwidth reduction, still in draft form. While promising 30% more efficiency than its predecessor, AV2 is currently in version 1.0.0, which is still slow and not yet ready for widespread use. Even the AOM hasn't made any specific announcement, and describes the standard as still being in draft form. Towards optimized streaming on Netflix and video platforms? This version therefore serves as a test to refine the software until it can deliver on its promises: either the same quality as before on services like Netflix, but with less bandwidth consumption, or increased quality with the same bandwidth, or a compromise between these two options. A phased adoption schedule identical to that of AV1. As a reminder, AV1, which is royalty-free, took its time before being widely adopted by streaming services and PC graphics cards. AV2 should therefore follow a similar path.
