Sony and TSMC: joint venture for next-generation image sensors dedicated to AI

Two electronics giants, one Japanese and the other Taiwanese, are joining forces to create and manufacture future image sensors for artificial intelligence applications.
Sony and TSMC have announced a joint venture agreement to build a next-generation image sensor factory in Japan, with Sony as the designer and TSMC providing its manufacturing expertise. This partnership reflects Sony's desire to move away from product manufacturing and focus on developing and selling intellectual property, a strategy already hinted at when the company sold a majority stake in its Bravia TV line to TCL. Sony and TSMC are targeting the production of AI sensors, particularly for the automotive and robotics industries, sectors requiring high-quality components. And Sony sensors are renowned, having been used for some time in iPhones and by the biggest names in the photography industry. Shinji Sashida, President and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, said, “Building on the trust developed over our long-standing collaboration with TSMC, I am delighted that we have reached an agreement to take our partnership to the next level. This joint venture is a major initiative that combines the strengths of both companies and aims to foster new technological and commercial advancements in the field of next-generation image sensors. Through this joint venture, Sony intends to further strengthen its business, with a focus on creating significant added value.” True to the Sony spirit that has guided us since our founding, we will continue to rise to the challenge of creating new markets through innovative ideas and distinctive technologies.” Dr. Kevin Zhang, Senior Vice President and Co-Deputy Chief Executive Officer of TSMC, said: “Sony has long been our partner in the field of CMOS image sensors. We are delighted to take our collaboration to the next level, which represents a key step in advancing future sensing technologies in the age of AI. This partnership underscores our shared commitment and vision: to leverage cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions to deliver leading sensing technologies and products. We look forward to working closely together to achieve significant results and create lasting value for all stakeholders.”
