Tom Cruise could play the villain in the next Miami Vice

Several well-informed sources suggest that Tom Cruise could play the villain in the new film adaptation of the cult 1980s NBC series, Miami Vice, which Joseph Kosinski is preparing for Universal Pictures.
The film's screenplay is by Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer. Unlike Michael Mann's superb 2006 film, Miami Vice, this new version will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, following two undercover detectives. The project will draw more directly from the pilot and first season of the original series, a major production by Michael Mann, whose influence on the television and cultural landscape remains considerable. Where the 2006 film opted for a grittier, more contemporary, and ultimately very personal approach, Kosinski's feature film seems to want to reconnect with the most iconic aspects of the show. This choice could appeal to fans of the series, who were sometimes disconcerted at the time by the radical nature of Mann's cinematic reboot, however brilliant it may have been. Who will play Sunny and Rico? The idea of seeing Tom Cruise in a villainous role is certainly intriguing, especially since Michael Mann himself directed the actor in a striking departure from his usual type in Collateral in 2004, one of his most acclaimed performances. Latest reports indicate that Austin Butler is in negotiations to play James "Sonny" Crockett, while Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan is reportedly in talks to play his on-screen partner, undercover detective Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs. If Cruise signs on, it would be his third collaboration with Joseph Kosinski after Oblivion and Top Gun: Maverick. Universal has set the film's theatrical release for August 6, 2027.
