US 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray sales outpace DVD for the first time

US physical video market data for the second week of July, published by US Media Play News and compiled by NPD VideoScan, is available. This marks a first for the US video market: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray sales have surpassed DVD sales. Better late than never.

Thus, for the week of 05/07 to 12/05 (see graph below), sales of [abc]4K[/abc] [abc]Ultra HD Blu-Ray[/abc] discs in the USA represented 36.4% of the physical media market. While the 4K Ultra HD format had already surpassed Blu-Ray in sales, this had never been the case for DVD. Finally…

Blu-Ray and DVD market shares££££ At the same time, [abc]Blu-Ray[/abc] had a 29% market share, [abc]DVD[/abc] 34.5%. For your information, this period saw sales of certain new 4K Ultra HD releases occupy the top spots in the ranking. This is the case for the film Sinners, the series Fallout season 1 or the film The Amateur whose 4K sales represented respectively 41%, 70% and 18% of all their discs sold (DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray).

4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray proportion for the Top 10££££ The same is true for other titles released previously. Thus, 98%, 96% and 78% of the [abc]Blu-Ray[/abc] discs respectively sold for Nosferatu (2024), Clueless and Barry Lindon were [abc]4K[/abc] [abc]Ultra HD[/abc]. Other notables include Gladiator II with 68%, Wicked at 43%, Captain America: Brave New World at 32%, Until Dawn and Warfare at 31%, Jaws at 18%, and The Monkey closing the Top 10 with 16%.
