Perfidious Prime Video: Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, it's over (unless you pay)

The ad has just arrived on Prime Video in the US and UK, and with it a host of bad news.

Were you delighted to have a streaming platform as a bonus to your Amazon Prime subscription? Well you must already know, it will soon be over in France. All good things must come to an end since unwanted ads will appear during your favorite programs.

Prime Video, you have to pay more for the same service££££

This is already the case in the USA since January 29, 2024, as well as in Germany, Austria, Canada and the United Kingdom since February 5 (current year for France). And no, it is not - like the competition - a cheap offer supported by advertising, but rather the current subscription which has been badly altered: those who do not want ads will have to pay more ( $2.99/£2.99/€2.99 additional per month) to maintain their current benefits.

As bad news never comes alone, our English colleague John Archer from Forbes tells us that subscribers will also lose other advantages: no more Dolby Atmos, no more Dolby Vision HDR. The only way to keep these attributes previously included in the basic subscription is to pay the additional payment requested for the exemption from advertising.

Not content with being disingenuous in its method (Prime Video had certainly announced the arrival of advertising on its service but not that it would be necessary to pay more to avoid it, unlike Netflix where advertising is linked to a more affordable subscription offer), Prime Video also proves to be sneaky in this story by omitting to specify the removal of Dolby Atmos and HDR Dolby Vision from its offer with advertising. And to add to the irony of the situation, via this same offer, the mentions Dolby Atmos and HDR Dolby Vision are still present on the cover pages of the appropriate content. Perfidy incarnate…
