Samsung buys eMagin: on the way to virtual and augmented reality

Apple's entry into the virtual reality market would motivate Samsung to take this market more seriously than before.

Samsung recently announced the acquisition of the American company eMagin, specializing in the manufacturing of micro-screens, used in particular for extended reality applications, or XR, a term encompassing virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR ), and mixed reality.

Samsung doesn't want to leave Apple alone...

The largest Oled screen manufacturer in the world, Samsung is preparing for market developments to, among other things, play a key role in AR and VR. Adding eMagin to Samsung Display is a sign that the Korean company takes these areas seriously, and does not want to be outdone by Apple, which made a strong impression with its first Vision Pro headset. It's not for nothing that Samsung recently revised its VR plans following the announcement of Apple's device.

“I speak for everyone at eMagin when I say that we are very excited to collaborate with Samsung Display, a global leader in display technology,” said Andrew G. Sculley, Chief Executive Officer of eMagin. Together, we will be able to realize the full potential of eMagin’s next-generation AR/VR solutions.”
