5G subscriptions for half the world in 2027

It will take a few more years before 5G is present in the pockets of half of subscribers to a mobile plan.

According to the latest estimates from GlobalData, at the end of 2022, there were 1.7 billion 5G mobile subscriptions worldwide, or 18% of the global total. A slightly more optimistic assessment than the Omdia firm, which estimates this figure at 1.05 billion. According to GlobalData, this subscriber base will increase to 5.5 billion by 2027, or 48% of the total. A figure this time less optimistic than that of Omdia, which sees for its part 5.9 billion.

Voices over to Laura Petrone, Senior Thematic Intelligence Analyst at GlobalData

“5G has yet to take off as many network operators had hoped, and the technology still needs a star consumer business-to-consumer (B2C) application beyond the fixed wireless access,” says Laura Petrone, senior thematic intelligence analyst at GlobalData. Cloud Gaming, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are among the areas likely to be tapped for opportunities.” Source: Advanced Television
