Video streaming, less and less popular on game consoles

PlayStation, Xbox and Switch are less and less used for video streaming services.

According to a recent survey by Aluma Insights (via Flatpanels), game consoles (Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo) represent 6% of the time spent streaming video via paid platforms. This figure was 26% in 2015.

Streaming 2023, consoles have given way to Smart TV

In 2011, 25% of Netflix subscribers used a Nintendo Wii, and the PlayStation 3 was even the most popular device for watching Netflix in its day, according to the online service. Where Smart TVs only accounted for 27% of viewing time in 2016, that figure is now 50%. An a priori normal trend, knowing that game consoles are no longer the best devices for streaming, with high energy consumption, average audio and video compatibility, and the absence of synchronization of frame rates and the dynamic range.

The word to Michael Greeson, founder of Aluma Insights

“This is an example of a well-established migration pattern,” says Michael Greeson, founder of Aluma Insights. The newer, more functional TV goes into the living room, and the model it replaces is moved to the master bedroom, then to the second bedroom, and so on. As the use of intermediate devices to watch streaming video in all rooms of the house is gradually reduced”.
