Since the announcement of the Samsung S95C and Samsung S90C TV series at the CES show in Las Vegas in early January, we've been playing the game of finding the seven differences between the two. With a central question, that of the differentiation of 55''/65'' S90C TV panels from those of 55''/65'' S95C TVs (pictured in this news).
QD Oled 2022 tiles, residual stock to manage…
Indeed, according to our information from South Korea obtained at the time of CES, Samsung Display would have sold around 450,000 55''/65'' panels in 2022 out of just over 600,000 units manufactured, which which induces a residual stock of slabs. The question does not arise for the 77C90C (77'') diagonal, new to the catalog in 2023 so necessarily from the same production line as for the 77S95C. We had therefore, at the time of CES, thought that the QD Oled 55 ''/65 '' 2022 vintage panels would be assigned to the S90C TV. Asked about the question, the company Samsung France could not answer us.
, QD Oled Samsung S95C TV, 30% brighter than Samsung S90C TVs
After our trip to the Samsung Summit in Frankfurt, it seems that this assumption was correct. Indeed, during an exchange with our eminent colleague Vincent Teoh from HDTVTest, the latter informed us about the increased performance in terms of brightness of the S95C TVs compared to the S90C, by around 20%. Neither one nor two, back to Samsung France and our contact in Korea to find out more. First, Samsung France has confirmed that the S95C will offer an image brighter on average than the S90C, from 25% to 30% according to their statements. Which gives 250 nits versus 200 nits for a 100% white window, 1,300 nits versus 1,000 nits for a 10% window, and around 2,000 nits peak versus 1,500 nits. A few hours ago, our Korean contact told us about other important points related to the S90C screens, discussed below.
TV QD Oled Samsung S90C, mix of 2022 and 2023 tiles
In view of Samsung's ambitions on the OLED TV market in 2023 (Editor's note: in France, Samsung had a market share of around 20% on the OLED TV market in 2022 with only two references; it plans to reach 40% of the national market in 2023 with six references), a problem arises: the stock of QD Oled 55''/65'' panels produced in 2022 will not be enough to supply the S90C series throughout the world in 2023. Confirmation came from Korea, the latter will therefore also host the new 55 ''/65 '' QD Oled 2023 vintage panels equipped with all the latest developments from Samsung Display. For the sake of consistency with the 2022 panels, the new ones will therefore see their performance restricted to display the same light performance.
Another nuance between the 2022 and 2023 QD Oled 55''/65'' panels, the new coating making it possible to attenuate the change in density of the blacks which appear a bit greyish in the presence of a direct light source, close to the slab (Editor's note: this is inherent in QD Oled technology, the nanocrystals of the Quantum Dots film being "excited" by this light produce a weak colored light). The Samsung Q90C series will therefore offer both types of panels, at least at the start of its marketing period until the 2022 specimens are sold out. On the other hand, we do not know if this duality of panels for S90C screens will concern all markets around the world or if only certain countries will be concerned.
