More than a billion 5G subscribers this year, and great growth in sight

With a much faster adoption rate than 4G in its day, the 5G standard continues to grow despite a difficult economic climate.

According to the latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, approximately 110 million new 5G subscriptions were taken out in the third quarter of 2022, for a total of 870 million worldwide.

5G, 5 billion subscribers in 2028…?

As predicted in the 2020 report, the number of subscribers should thus exceed one billion by the end of 2022. Thus, 5G will reach this milestone two years before 4G reached it in its day. The new report predicts that the number of 5G subscribers will reach five billion by the end of 2028, despite the current economic difficulties. 5G will then represent 55% of all subscriptions, and 85% of the population will be covered, while 5G networks will handle 70% of mobile traffic.

5G, in-game price elasticity

The main factors of this growth are the rapid availability of compatible devices from many manufacturers, as well as prices declining faster than those of 4G devices, not to mention the massive and early deployment in China.
