The Lord of the Rings Vs House of the Dragon: The Truth

Which of the two star series from Prime Video and HBO had the best start with the public?

The coincidence of calendars (but is it really a coincidence) has brought two big, highly anticipated series face to face on two competing streaming platforms: The Rings of Power on Prime Video and House of the Dragon on HBO Max (OCS in France). What's more, series descending from two franchises that have left an indelible mark on the realm of pop culture: The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.

And the winner is…

The Nielsen Institute regularly surveys the audience of the most watched programs on streaming platforms, and for the week of August 29 to September 4, it is The Rings of Power that won the hearts of viewers (at least in numbers). Knowing that House of the Dragon launched on August 21 and The Rings of Power on September 1, we can consider this to be the first week that the series were in direct competition.

Renewed interest in the original series

In detail, the Prime Video series generated 1.25 billion minutes of viewing over this period for two episodes to its credit, compared to 781 million minutes for the HBO series and its three episodes. Note that over this same period, House of the Dragon is even a little below its predecessor Game of Thrones, which for its part generates 792 million minutes. Either a witness to the renewed interest in the original series, aroused by the arrival of its successor.
