Studiocanal Classics: 1,000 masterpieces restored in 4K, from Terminator 2 to David Lynch

Backed by a vast catalog of 18,000 works, Studiocanal recently officially announced the worldwide launch of Studiocanal Classics. A brand-new prestige label dedicated to the 4K restoration of the greatest masterpieces of cinema, from Terminator 2 to Pan’s Labyrinth, including the classics of David Lynch.

With the most extensive collection outside the United States (covering no fewer than a century of film history), the Canal+ group’s subsidiary switched into high gear at the end of the summer with the aim of enhancing its heritage. It was thus learned that, over the past seven years, nearly 25 million euros have been invested to restore no fewer than 1,000 feature films in 4K. A colossal undertaking that is being realized through this exclusive label, designed to shine on all fronts: 112 re-releases in theaters and 170 releases dedicated to home viewing.

The return to theaters of the sacred monsters Studiocanal’s restoration strategy first and foremost offers the chance to (re)discover true monuments on the big screen. Among the event releases accompanying this launch, one should note The Sixth Sense (Michael Mann’s thriller, a.k.a. Manhunter), which is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a 4K Director’s Cut version. Another major anniversary is the 35th of the indispensable Terminator 2: Judgment Day by James Cameron, back in theaters around the world since the end of August with screenings in 2D, 3D, 4DX and D-Box. Film buffs are also entitled to the restored 4K version of Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth (also offered in 3D), a fine retrospective devoted to Jacques Tati, and the presentation of the legendary To Be or Not to Be by Ernst Lubitsch (at the 2026 Venice Film Festival).

4K video releases at home and David Lynch box set The Studiocanal Classics label is also making its way to film fans through numerous 4K home releases, with the French studio’s press release leaving the door wide open to both digital formats and physical media. This autumn, releases are expected for Blood Simple (the Coen brothers’ first film), Inside Llewyn Davis, Accident, Chaplin with Robert Downey Jr., and Un Flic, Jean-Pierre Melville’s last feature film, not to mention a Jacques Tati retrospective in November. On the pure 4K Ultra HD physical media front, the excitement is already palpable: in the United Kingdom, the collector’s edition of The Sixth Sense (featuring 13 bonuses including an interview with Michael Mann) is already marked “sold out” months before its expected late-November release. To top it all off, Studiocanal promises a highly anticipated collection devoted to the great David Lynch for 2027.

Studiocanal Classics, cultural heritage exploited 360° Anna Marsh, Managing Director of Studiocanal, sums up the project’s ambition: “We have a responsibility to preserve the impact and cultural legacy of these films (...). We believe every generation should have the opportunity to discover, promote and admire some of the greatest films of all time.” A heritage enhanced 360 degrees through music rights management, the production of film concerts (The King and the Mockingbird, Terminator 2), advertising campaigns (Chanel, Cartier) and the integration of licenses into today’s pop culture (the T-800 from Terminator 2 in the video games Fortnite or Call of Duty).

The first theatrical and video releases (4K home editions) from the Studiocanal Classics label began at the end of the summer and will run throughout autumn 2026. The detailed 2027 catalog (including the famous David Lynch collection) will be unveiled later.
