The cast brings together Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Leguizamo, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane and Sasha Calle. The project marks a complete reboot of the franchise. Mike Flanagan, director of Doctor Sleep and creator of Midnight Mass, who is also behind the series Carrie, is said to have been given total creative freedom to take the saga in the direction he wanted.
Scarlett Johansson on the trail of the killer Father Sunday
And even if not everyone can turn into William Friedkin, it must be said that these first images are intriguing. They do indeed seem to move away from everything the franchise has shown us so far in theaters. All the better. But let’s wait to see a little more before getting carried away.
No official synopsis has yet been revealed, but according to several reports, the story follows a police officer and single mother, played by Scarlett Johansson. Thirteen years after arresting a notoriously infamous satanist serial killer named Father Sunday, played by John Leguizamo, she investigates a new series of murders linked to her past. At the same time, her 12-year-old son becomes the target of a terrifying demonic force. Chiwetel Ejiofor will portray a priest involved in the investigation.
All of Flanagan’s universe in The Exorcist : Martyrs
Many actors familiar with Flanagan’s universe, including those seen in The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher, will also be in the cast: Rahul Kohli, Carla Gugino, Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr. and Benjamin Pajak.
Flanagan has already explained that he wants to make the scariest film of his career and offer something that has “never been done in the franchise,” while “paying homage to what came before it without relying on nostalgia.”
The Exorcist : Martyrs will be released in theaters next March. For its part, the new adaptation of Carrie envisioned by Mike Flanagan (click for our review) will arrive on Prime Video as soon as tomorrow.
