The potential of the relatively young smart glasses market seems to be attracting interest. And according to a patent recently discovered in China, the company Insta360 is also preparing its own model. Best known for its action cameras, 360° cameras, and smartphone stabilizers, Insta360 would therefore be entering a new sector. Details appearing in the patent also suggest that the company would rely on its existing strengths to stand out.
A cable-connected external battery module
The document describes glasses without a battery. The battery would be moved to an external module connected by a cable, similar to what the Apple Vision Pro or Meta VR Glasses offer. Such a setup makes it possible to make the glasses very lightweight, which would help turn them into a new type of action camera, controlled by head movements, or even eye movement.
The image before AI assistants
During a recent interview with The Verge, Insta360 co-founder Max Richter explained that if the brand were to enter this sector, it would not want to compete with other manufacturers on the usual features of AI-powered virtual assistants. In other words, Insta360 could rely on its established strengths and expand its offering with a new way to record high-quality videos hands-free.
This project is still at the experimental and patent-filing stage, and Insta360 has announced no commercial name, release window, or price for these potential smart glasses. Reminder of the key features of Insta360 smart glasses (rumors): • Type: smart glasses (hands-free action camera) • Power: external remote battery module connected by cable • Main feature: high-quality video recording • Ergonomics: lightweight frame for extended comfort • Control (supposed): operation by head or eye movements
