After the prestigious Oscars ceremony, which is leaving traditional television to arrive on YouTube in 2029, another American television institution is making its way to a streaming platform: the Emmy Awards—the equivalent of the Oscars for TV series and programs—on Prime Video.
Emmy Awards free for all Prime Video subscribers
Since 1949, the ceremony has rotated among the four major broadcast networks, ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX. It is now moving to Prime Video, at least for the next six years, the length of this initial contract. The Emmys will be broadcast for free (no subscription required) in more than 240 countries.
“Television has never been more international, and the Emmys should be a celebration that the whole world can share,” said Cris Abrego, president of the Television Academy. “Having a dedicated broadcaster on Prime Video allows us to build on that legacy and benefit from an unprecedented global reach, while strengthening our commitment to the Television Academy and its mission throughout the year. Amazon shares the deep respect we have for the history of the Emmys and brings the investment, innovation and scale needed to help shape their next chapter.”
“For nearly eight decades, the Emmys have honored the best storytelling and the greatest talent in television, and we are honored that Prime Video has been chosen as the global broadcaster of this celebration over the next six years,” added Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. “Broadcasting the Emmys for free on Prime Video is another way to bring the best entertainment to our customers around the world, and we look forward to working with the Television Academy on this iconic event.”
