While Australia recently banned social media for those under 16, the United States is also taking a step in the right direction, even if it remains less drastic. In New York State, social media platforms must now warn users of their harmful effects. New York State recently joined California and Minnesota in implementing a law that forces social media platforms to display warnings on their platforms. Specifically, messages explaining the detrimental effects of recommendation algorithms on users' mental health must be displayed, particularly regarding addiction. This applies to platforms that use infinite scrolling and autoplay videos—all the usual suspects such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.
