Released in 2015, the nVidia Shield TV media player is the oldest Android device still receiving updates today. Remarkable.
Aside from Apple TV, the Nvidia Shield TV is the oldest multimedia device still receiving updates today. And despite the machine's age—over ten years—Nvidia has no intention of abandoning it. Andrew Bell, Nvidia's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, explained this in an interview with Ars Technica: "We were all frustrated as phone and tablet buyers: you buy a device, you get one or two updates, and then nothing! From the very beginning, when we were developing the Shield TV, we decided to design it to last. Jensen (Huang, Nvidia's CEO) and I had a discussion: 'How long do we want to support this product?'" And Jensen replied: “As long as we live.” Regarding a new Nvidia Shield TV box, Nvidia, through Andrew Bell, explains that they don't have any concrete plans, but they don't rule it out. “We've been experimenting with new concepts for the Shield and we'll continue to do so, and if we find something that really excites us, we'll probably give it a shot,” explains Bell. “We talk about it all the time; I'd love to.” A potential new Shield TV would prioritize recent video codec formats like AV1, as well as expanded HDR support, including HDR10+ and new Dolby Vision HDR profiles for playing local content.
