Your AirPods improved in September with iOS 26

Apple's upcoming product update in September will have some interesting side effects on AirPods.

Shortly after the release of the iPhone 17 in the fall, the iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe software updates will be launched, which will allow new features on the AirPods earphones, accessories which will also benefit from a [abc]Firmware[/abc] update.

Below, a quick reminder (and new details) of the improvements that await you:

• AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 will allow studio-quality audio recordings, useful for interviews, podcasts, music or video productions

• Phone calls will benefit from increased quality (AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2), as will sound on FaceTime and other CallKit-compatible apps like Zoom

• Ability to use AirPods as a remote control for the Camera app (and third-party apps) on iPhone and iPad. Simply hold the stem of an AirPod to start a recording or take a photo

• Automatically pause music when you fall asleep. Also works with Beats headphones

• Option to prevent (or allow) AirPods audio from automatically switching to CarPlay when you get in your car

• Clearer battery status indications via new indicator lights on the charging case
