Smartphone market: Apple new leader, a first

In a gloomy context for the smartphone market, Apple is doing well and becomes the best seller of the year for the first time in its history.

Confirming the summer predictions of Counterpoint Research, two other analysis firms -IDC and Canalys- independently agree on the figures for smartphone sales worldwide in 2023: for the first time in more than ten years Samsung loses its place as best seller and cedes it to Apple.

Smartphone Market 2023, the Top 5££££

The iPhone sold 234.6 million units last year, compared to 226.6 million for Samsung devices. Xiaomi, Oppo, and Transsion close the Top 5 with respectively 145.9 million, 103.1 million and 94.9 million units sold.

The last time Samsung was not in pole position in the market Smartphone was in 2010. At the time, Apple was not even in the Top 5, so it was composed as follows: Nokia first, followed by Samsung, LG, ZTE and Research in Motion (Blackberry). A ranking that says a lot about how the smartphone market has evolved since then.

; “Apple's continued success and resilience can be largely explained by the growing trend towards premium devices, which now represent more than 20% market growth, driven by aggressive takeover offers and interest-free financing plans,” explains IDC Worldwide Tracker Research Director Nabila Popal.
