Subjected to flames, blades, and forced twisting, the latest South Korean foldable smartphone proves once again the robustness of its hinge, even if its screens retain some predictable weaknesses.
A word of warning for those unfamiliar with Zack Nelson from the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything: his video shows a brand-new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 undergoing the worst possible treatment. Zack is a specialist in extreme durability testing for electronic gadgets, tasked with verifying manufacturers' claims about the longevity of their devices. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: The Cutter and Lighter Ordeal. Zack is indeed a sadist… a specialist in durability testing for electronic gadgets. To verify manufacturers' claims about the robustness of their devices, Samsung's latest foldable smartphone had to endure direct attacks with a cutter, attempts at unnatural folding, and even direct contact with a lighter flame on its screen. Unsurprisingly, the screens don't withstand sharp cuts from a box cutter (especially the flexible inner screen), nor prolonged exposure to a bright flame. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: A Hinge That Can't Be Damaged. The device is obviously not indestructible, but like its predecessors, it performs admirably in several key areas. In particular, it resists the intrusion of fine particles (in this case, sand) into its mechanism very well. Most importantly, the smartphone proves impossible to break when you try to force it open from the opposite direction, a structural feat that wasn't present in the Trifold model.
