Piracy in France: 1 billion euros in losses for sport

Piracy in France represents a big loss of income for local channels, particularly those specializing in sports broadcasts.

Despite a drop in piracy in Europe, illegal streaming in France continues, to the detriment of the country's channels. According to a recent report from the association of thematic channels ACCeS, published by NPA Conseil, 5.1% of the population uses streaming platforms and illegal IPTV boxes.

This piracy would represent a loss of revenue of 500 million euros per year for French thematic channels, as well as nearly a billion for channels dedicated to sport. In 2018, the APPS (Association for the Protection of Sports Programs) was created to try to stem the phenomenon. “Fighting piracy is the best way to make money for the channels,” declared Xavier Spender, president of the association.
