Hello Actors Studio: immersed in the legendary New York institution

1947. As the world underwent profound changes after the war, Hollywood faced an unprecedented crisis. Staff strikes are increasing, antitrust laws and the witch hunt launched by Congress are definitively chipping away at the glamorous image of the dream factory. It is in this difficult context that three young theater actors, Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis (soon replaced by Lee Strasberg) created the Actor's Studio in New York. A rigorous drama school based on the “Method” of Constantin Stanislavski, a Russian actor and playwright who revolutionized performance techniques.

Forty years later, the prestigious institution opened its doors to French documentary filmmaker Annie Tresgot. Divided into three parts, The Actors' Workshop (58 minutes), A Public Solitude (56 minutes), A Work Community (56 minutes), Hello Actors Studio invites us into the legendary American laboratory for professional actors. Paul Newman, Jane Fonda, Ellen Burstyn, Sydney Pollack, Shelley Winters, Eli Wallach, Arthur Penn, Gene Wilder among others, recount their formative years combining intense creative movement and the quest for an authentic and internalized playing style.
