Apple's MagSafe and Qi2 are coming to… Android

Announced at the CES show in Las Vegas 2023 in early January, the new Qi2 wireless charging format will democratize the magnetic attachment previously reserved for Apple devices.

At the head of the Qi wireless charging development standard, the WPC (Wireless Power Consortium) announced the new Qi2 version at CES 2023.

Qi2 wireless charging for cross-brand interoperability?

The big news is the integration of technologies introduced by Apple in its proprietary MagSafe format, including magnetic alignment for optimized charging, and device authentication. The idea behind this initiative is to simplify the interoperability between chargers and devices, to stop wondering if such charger is compatible or not with such smartphone, tablet or others. Samsung and Apple are expected to launch Qi2-certified products soon, more precisely at the end of 2023 while waiting for the Qi2 specifications to be validated in the middle of the year.

On the performance side, we are still on fast charging at 15 W, but the WPC aims to increase these capacities in the future.
