Baby Yoda 'shamelessly' copied on Gizmo

The director of Gremlins doesn't have very fond words for the cute little Grogu from the Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

Ahead of a special screening in San Francisco of his film Gremlins and its sequel Gremlins 2, director Joe Dante gave an interview to the San Francisco Chronicle to discuss his career. At the bend of a question, he evokes Gizmo, a cute little character and true star of the Gremlins saga.

“I think the longevity of these films is very much tied to this character, who is basically like a baby,” Dante explains. Which brings me, of course, to the subject of Baby Yoda, which was completely stolen from me and totally copied. Shamelessly, I would even say”.

A tough opinion, but one that still hasn't prompted Dante to confront Disney's lawyers. And then remember that Yoda, the original, first appeared on screen in 1980 during The Empire Strikes Back, while Gremlins came out in… 1984.
