Amazon Prime more expensive, but why?

For once, there are real reasons behind Amazon Prime's September 15 price increase.

From €5.99 to €6.99 per month and from €49 to €69.90 per year, this will be the price increase to access the benefits of the Amazon Prime service, both for new subscribers and for the elders. To justify this new price, Amazon cites the increase in inflation, operating costs, as well as the multiplication of its content on its video service Prime Video.

Amazon, shipping costs multiplied by 40 between 2009 and 2021

And indeed, shipping costs have gone crazy, particularly in view of the rising prices of fuel, energy, and packaging. Statista has calculated on the graph below the evolution of Amazon's logistics costs over the years, more particularly the costs of shipping and order management. Between 2009 and 2021, they have multiplied by 40, which is faster growth than the company's turnover, multiplied by 20 over the same period.

Amazon, logistics costs from 15.6% of turnover in 2009 to 32.3% in 2021

For their part, logistics costs accounted for 15.6% of Amazon's net sales in 2009, while in 2021, their share rose to 32.3%.
