Paramount is preparing a Cyberpunk 2077 film

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077, the famous role-playing and action video game from CD Projekt Red.

The plot of the game takes place in Night City, a fictional cyberpunk metropolis located in California. At the heart of the story, V, a mercenary who finds himself unwillingly carrying a cybernetic biochip containing a digital copy of Johnny Silverhand's consciousness (Keanu Reeves), legendary rock star and terrorist. As Silverhand's consciousness gradually begins to take control of V's mind, the two characters must join forces to manage to separate and save the mercenary's life. Their quest leads them to confront the Arasaka corporation, a powerful multinational that de facto rules the city.

Cyberpunk game and Cyberpunk film, the loop is closed

The film adaptation will take place in the same universe, but will not necessarily follow the video game's plot. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce.

Since Cyberpunk 2077 draws much of its inspiration from classics of cinema, starting with Blade Runner and Akira, its move to the big screen seems almost natural. In a way, the loop will be closed. All that remains is to hope that the screenplay will live up to the project's ambitions and that the film will not be reduced to a purely mercantile fan service exercise.

Cyberpunk 2077, from launch crash to success

For behind this announcement also lie figures that are particularly appealing for Paramount: the original game has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide (despite numerous bugs at its creation, see Cyberpunk 2077 causes its publisher to lose 1 billion), while its expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has surpassed 15 million sales.

This project adds to the list of video game adaptations currently being developed by Paramount, including Street Fighter, due next week, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, scheduled for March, as well as a film based on the Call of Duty franchise.
