Home Video Saga: 50 years of Star Wars and physical media in an event 4K UHD HDR docu-fiction

At a time when dematerialization reigns supreme, a wild project is about to land on Kickstarter at the end of September. Called Home Video Saga, this two-hour docu-fiction retraces fifty years of home cinema history, from Super 8 to Ultra HD 4K disc, through the evolution of the physical editions of the Star Wars saga. A true declaration of love to fans of physical formats and collectors.

“For two years now, I have been working on a slightly crazy project: Home Video Saga. 50 years of cinema at home, in praise of physical media and the Space Opera that have made us dream since childhood.”.

It was with these words, posted on X, that Jean-Antoine Lacolle, VFX artist and creator of the YouTube channel Le labo de Jay, announced his new baby. After documenting the 4K Ultra HD restoration of Astérix & Obélix : mission Cléopâtre, the filmmaker is taking on a monumental fresco that should send shivers down the spines of all image purists and nostalgics of the golden age of LaserDisc, Star Wars.

Home Video Saga, the story of Home Cinema through the prism of Star Wars The starting premise of Home Video Saga is as original as it is captivating. The story propels us into 2138: after five years of a major worldwide blackout, dematerialized broadcasting no longer exists. Films have survived only thanks to their physical media, now scattered. In an archive center dedicated to Star Wars, a tutor droid teaches a young unit the importance of these objects. Through this storyline blending live-action footage and 3D images (all guaranteed to be free of the slightest generative artificial intelligence), the documentary explores the evolution of video and audio formats in our living rooms. The common thread? A global collection of editions from the universe of George Lucas, ranging from old Super 8 reels to the recent [abc]Ultra HD[/abc] [abc]4K[/abc] discs.

Home Video Saga, a reference 4K UHD HDR edition on Kickstarter Designed by an enthusiast for enthusiasts, this bilingual docu-fiction (French/English) had to be technically impeccable. The [abc]master[/abc] will be finalized in [abc]HDR[/abc] (Jean-Antoine Lacolle being certified [abc]HDR Dolby Vision[/abc] and [abc]HDR10+[/abc]) and mixed in immersive sound ([abc]Dolby Atmos[/abc]/[abc]DTS:X[/abc]).

The project will be available in four physical editions designed as true collector’s items. On the menu of the most comprehensive edition (spread over four discs, two of which are dedicated to the film in HDR, one for the bonus features and one for the archives): advanced interactivity paying tribute to the menus of the best [abc]Blu-Ray[/abc] releases, a bonus disc (making of), the isolated soundtrack, Art Cards and a luxurious exclusive 150-page book (Guerres magnétiques) co-written by Patrice Girod (a key figure for fans, founder of the historic French Lucasfilm Magazine and a great expert on the saga) and Antoine Bardet (author, pop culture specialist and immense collector). As a cherry on top, some editions will even include a genuine 35 mm sample on archival film.
