Johnny Depp in talks for a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean

Against all odds, and despite past statements by Johnny Depp himself, the actor could finally reprise the role of Jack Sparrow in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film.
Six months ago, producer Jerry Bruckheimer gave the latest news regarding a potential sixth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean, a project that finally seemed to be taking real shape. A few weeks earlier, Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of 1917, had begun discussions to write the script, while Bruckheimer confirmed to ET that he had "met with Margot Robbie about the next Pirates." Margot Robbie was initially slated to star in a Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off, a project that ultimately never materialized. Bruckheimer, however, still seems keen to include her in the next major chapter of the franchise, while Disney's new head, Josh D'Amaro, is reportedly determined to move the project forward.

Margot Robbie, Heart of a Pirate? At the D23 Expo this weekend, Bruckheimer provided further details to Deadline: "We are in discussions with Johnny, we are working on a script and, with a bit of luck, we will be able to make it all happen."

According to other sources close to the project cited by the media outlet, this new film should refocus the plot around the character played by Margot Robbie, who would become the true protagonist, while Johnny Depp would reprise his role as Jack Sparrow in an important but more secondary part, ultimately quite similar to the role he played in the first film.

Johnny Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean: never say never… ££££

Suffice it to say, the project seems to have a good chance of heading in this direction. And for Johnny Depp, who had previously stated he would never set foot on the Black Pearl again, the old adage might prove true once more: never say never. It must be said that with nearly $4.5 billion generated at the worldwide box office by the five films in the saga, Disney has some particularly compelling arguments to bring its captain back. Arguments that, even from afar, Johnny Depp must already be hearing.
