Apple iPhone Duo, 44% increase in production in the face of the influx of pre-orders?

Driven by a volume of pre-orders deemed exceptional for its very first foldable smartphone, iPhone Duo, the Cupertino firm is said to have revised its targets upward, ordering up to 14 million units from its subcontractors for the next twelve months.

Apple is therefore significantly revising upward the production pace of its iPhone Duo. According to information gathered by the Taiwanese financial daily DigiTimes, whose ears are traditionally very close to Asian assembly lines, the brand with the apple has ordered several million additional units from its industrial partners after noting demand described internally as “simply extraordinary”.

Foxconn and the supply chain under pressure

In detail, the assembler Foxconn and component manufacturers have received orders reflecting a production increase of around 44% compared with the volume initially planned (from 9.7 million to 14 million units). This new quantity is intended to cover twelve months of device sales.

Nevertheless, increasing production rates to reach this new target quickly could prove complicated. According to DigiTimes, the validation of such volumes remains closely linked to yields on the manufacturing lines, which have been rather disrupted for many months due to the technical complexity related to flexible panels and hinges.

The foldable smartphone market boosted by Apple

This acceleration illustrates the reshuffling of the deck on a global scale. According to DigiTimes’ projections (see illustration above), shipments of foldable smartphones are expected to post growth of +25.7% in 2026, before surging by +59.1% in 2027. By comparison, growth was capped at +7.4% in 2025: Apple’s arrival in this market segment is clearly not unrelated to the growing interest of the general public in these products.
