LG Display, massive investment in Guangzhou to produce the first 97" and 111" Oled TV panels?

Is the South Korean manufacturer LG Display about to shake up the ultra-large-size market? Following a capital increase of 1 billion yuan (150 million dollars) in partnership with the Chinese state-owned company Guangkai Holdings, the Guangzhou operating subsidiary is expected to open a new OLED panel production line. On the agenda: 77'', 83'', 97'' diagonals and gigantic 111" panels aimed at the premium and professional market.
According to the latest official Chinese announcements (notably from the public investment group Guangzhou Development Zone Holding Group) published yesterday and today, LG Display has finalized a strategic financial agreement. This takes the form of a joint capital increase totaling 1 billion yuan (about 150 million dollars). The funds are being directly injected into their joint operating subsidiary based in Guangzhou: LG Display Optoelectronics Technology (China) Co., Ltd. As a reminder, LG Display holds 80% of the capital of the Guangzhou OLED panel plant, with the remaining 20% owned by the public group (and thus the Chinese state) Guangzhou Development Zone Holding Group.
The Guangzhou plant 100% OLED
This investment was signed as part of a technological modernization project aimed at building a new production line for very large Oled modules (“Large Oled” segment). This new investment also completes the total specialization of the Guangzhou hub in Oled technology, with LG Display having formally ended production of LCD panels at this same site in spring 2025 (see our news LG officially withdraws from LCD, TCL takes the prize (and the Chinese control 70% of global production)).
The return of the 97'' Oled TV and the world first for 111''
This new industrial tool will therefore be sized to support the assembly of standard 77'' (196 cm) and 83'' (211 cm) panels, but above all the unconventional 97'' (246 cm) and even 111'' (282 cm) diagonals. As a reminder, LG Display had already offered 97'' Oled TV panels in 2022, before stopping production (extremely costly) of these huge panels and favoring the 83-inch diagonal. Above all, Chinese industrial documents (relayed by IThome and Sina Finance) explicitly state that this will be the world’s very first Oled module line capable of handling 111-inch diagonals. LG Display’s goal is to establish itself on two fronts simultaneously: the premium domestic market (giant home cinema screens) and large-scale commercial display (B2B).
For the time being, no precise release date or indicative price has been announced regarding the arrival on the consumer and professional market of the future screens equipped with these gigantic 97'' and 111-inch Oled panels.
