This version of Miami Vice differs from the Unrated Director’s Cut, which is 8 minutes longer and already available on video, and which Mann himself had described as a simple “revision” rather than a true Director’s Cut. The filmmaker has also long maintained that the theatrical version was his true director’s cut.
Michael Mann prevented in the Dominican Republic during the filming of Miami Vice
A position that therefore seems to have changed, since Michael Mann himself will be present at this exceptional screening. The director had notably been unable to film the ending he had originally wanted. A shoot in the Dominican Republic, cut short compared with the schedule, had forced him to quickly revise his plans.
Miami Vice: Director’s Final Cut: a 3-hour cut?
For years, rumors have also mentioned the existence of a version of the film that is nearly 3 hours long. For now, no one knows exactly what to expect and the running time of this new cut has not yet been announced.
Freshly received upon its release in 2006, Miami Vice has nevertheless acquired over the years a true cult-film status. A recent screening in Los Angeles in the presence of Michael Mann had moreover reignited discussions around the feature film and its different versions.
The specialized account Dawn of the Discs also claims that a 4K UHD edition of this new Final Cut is being prepared as well. Suffice it to say that, in the series of good cinephile news, this one ranks very, very high on the list.
