Brighter and cheaper OLED screens: can LG Display's new FLiPP process revolutionize the market?

The South Korean giant LG Display lifts the veil on a major industrial breakthrough. Dubbed FLiPP, this new manufacturing method promises OLED panels that are significantly brighter, more durable, and more economical, capable of covering diagonals ranging from 1" to 100" without constraint for both televisions and connected devices.

FLiPP: major gains in brightness, longevity and power consumption

Named FLiPP, for FMM-less Innovative Pixel Patterning, this less expensive production process delivers screens up to 1.6 times brighter, 2.4 times longer-lasting, and consumes 13% less energy.

 

The end of FMM masks: total freedom from 1" to 100"

As its name suggests, FLiPP gets rid of FMMs, or “fine metal masks,” used as a kind of stencil to position the organic diodes (the famous Oleds) on each layer (red, green, blue) of the screen. Technical, costly and wasteful, the FMM process should therefore eventually give way to FliPP, which also has the advantage of being able to generate all screen sizes, between 1" and 100", whereas FMM dimensions are defined in advance, constraining the diagonal of the final product.

 

Moreover, the larger the FMM mask, the more it bends at the center under its own weight, slightly deforming it, which leads to errors in placing the organic diodes. Producing large mother panels is therefore very difficult to control, which goes a long way toward explaining the price of large Oled TV diagonals.

 

Professional deployment first, Oled TVs later

In a first phase, the new process will be used for monitors and professional applications before being rolled out to televisions and other wearable devices, normally leading to even lower prices for consumers. For televisions, we will have to wait several more years. It remains to be seen whether by then, Ink-Jet Printing Oled technology (see our news: TCL CSOT: construction of a Gen 8.6 Ink-Jet Printing Oled factory confirmed) will have won the production race…
