AI-generated music: how will Spotify regulate fake “personalities” in the fall?

Starting with the new school year, Spotify is going to take a tougher stance against the influx of tracks generated by artificial intelligence on its platform. The music streaming giant will require fake artists to be clearly identified as such, thus ensuring better transparency for its listeners.

Source of very numerous soulless mushes, but also a tool for experimentation and a few remarkable pieces, AI is a hot topic in the music world. And if the music industry in general, or platforms like Deezer in particular, are taking the AI invasion seriously, a giant like Spotify seems more relaxed about the issue.

Spotify introduces an "AI personality" label

However, aware of the problem, the platform will take steps at the start of the school year to bring transparency to its users. Thus, the company will apply an "AI personality" label to artists who are not really artists.

A desire for transparency demanded by listeners

"Listeners have made it clear to us that they don't like coming across an artist profile that seems human, only to later discover that the character is AI-generated," said Spotify. "The new label signals to listeners that an artist's identity may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person."

The recommendation algorithm also updated

The artists concerned will have to come forward to receive the label, and Spotify will on its side verify the most suspicious undeclared accounts. "AI personalities" will not be recommended by the Spotify algorithm, unless the user already follows an AI artist.
