Wikiflix, the (free) Netflix of Wikipedia
23.12.2025 • 11h58
If you've ever wondered what Netflix would have looked like at the beginning of the last century, take a look at Wikipedia's free video platform, Wikiflix.
Launched quietly last year but recently promoted by social media, WikiFlix is a completely free video platform, requiring no personal information whatsoever, created by the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. WikiFlix offers over 4,000 free and open-access films. The principle behind WikiFlix is to make available films whose copyright has expired, and therefore they are now in the public domain. In fact, while the available titles aren't exactly new, among the more than 4,000 works selected by Wikipedia are classics like A Trip to the Moon (1902) by the French pioneer of cinema and special effects, Georges Méliès, Metropolis (1927) by Fritz Lang, Nosferatu (1922), and Wings (1927), the first feature film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. A true goldmine for film buffs, to be discovered as soon as possible.
