James Cameron's film, Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes, looks set to dominate the weekend worldwide, with $88 million in revenue in the US market and $345 million worldwide, making it the second-best global opening of the year, behind Zootopia 2.
Another notable indicator: the expected Sunday attendance drop in the United States is around 18%, a decline identical to that recorded by Avatar: The Way of Water between its second and third days in theaters, even though Avatar 3's total remains significantly lower: The Way of Water opened with $134 million. It is estimated that 5.2 million viewers saw this third Avatar film during its opening weekend in the US market, compared to 8.7 million for the second installment. It nevertheless still dominates the global box office to date. What box office figures follow Avatar? Zootopia 2, for its part, has now reached $1.27 billion in worldwide revenue and has allowed Disney to cross the $6 billion mark this year. In the United States, the film ranked fifth this weekend with an additional $14.5 million. The confessional film David took second place with $22 million. The dark comedy-thriller The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney, came in third with $19 million, while the new SpongeBob SquarePants movie held fourth place with $16 million. At Universal, the decline continued: Five Nights at Freddy's 2 and Wicked: For Good ranked sixth and seventh, with $7.3 million and $4.3 million respectively. This makes a rapid shift to PVOD all the more strategic at this stage. Timothée Chalamet's film outperforms on only 6 screens. In a limited release, Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, achieved a record-breaking performance: ninth at the box office with $875,000, despite being shown on only six screens. The film thus boasts a spectacular average of $145,000 per screen, the best in years and the highest for a "platform" release since LA LA Land in 2016, ahead of a wider release scheduled for next week.
