Lego GameBoy modified to… play GameBoy

Lego has just released a replica of Nintendo's legendary portable console, which of course can't be played with, except that...

Released in early October, the Lego GameBoy kit pays homage to Nintendo's legendary handheld console. A beautiful object to display at home, but unfortunately, you can't play with it. However, that was without counting on Natalie the Nerd, a hardware modification specialist who only took a few days to stuff the object with the necessary components and turn it into a real gaming machine.

A geek transformed Lego into a real Lego GameBoy ££££

"I integrated the power circuit I use for my Safer Charger cards, replaced the power switch with a soft electronic latching button, and added outputs for the button matrix and audio," explains the tinkerer on her blog, who recreated a custom PCB to fit into a tight space. No software emulation, then, but some good precision engineering.

The project also involved 3D-printed parts (like the buttons and joystick). Natalie the Nerd has already announced that she will refine the project and then publish the plans so that other tinkerers can also try this clever modification.
