PlayStation 6, Sony's strategy

Sony explains what to expect from its next generation of consoles, including a strong opinion on the move to Cloud Gaming.

At a recent strategy meeting, Sony discussed the upcoming PlayStation 6 console, hinting that the console would follow the traditional model used until now, namely the use of physical format and local play, and not a move to 100% Cloud Gaming/[abc]streaming[/abc].

Speaking to Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment££££

“We have been experimenting with Cloud Gaming for over 11 years,” explained Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “We have deployed Cloud Gaming on the PS3, PS4 and PS5 generations, and we are really proud of the quality we have delivered. We offer streaming via PS Plus Premium, and we have a beta version of Cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal.” He continued: “However, the Cloud Gaming business model must be sustainable for long-term growth.” Cloud gaming is progressing well from a technical perspective, as we have demonstrated with these offerings, but end-to-end network stability is not within our control. The higher cost of our gaming time compared to the traditional console model remains a challenge. Cloud gaming increasingly offers an additional way for players to access content, but we believe that the majority of players continue to want to enjoy the gaming experience by running locally, without depending on network conditions.
