Samsung QN800D TV: Ultra HD 8K, Mini LED 65'', 75'' and 85''

After the technical characteristics of the Samsung QN900D televisions (see our Samsung QN900D TV news: Ultra HD 8K, Mini LED 65'', 75'' and 85''), focus on those of the Samsung QN800D series, always Ultra HD 8K obedience.

Like the 2023 QLED Ultra HD 8K QN800C TV series, the Samsung QN800D also has three references, the Samsung TQ65QN800D (65'', 165 cm), Samsung TQ75QN800D (75'', 191 cm) and Samsung TQ85QN800D (85'', 216 cm).

Samsung QN800D, zoom on the design££££

Design-wise, you don't change a recipe that works. Identical to their predecessors, these televisions still feature such a splendid design, with a virtually borderless screen and no black borders around the panel, called the Infinity Screen. This impression is further accentuated by the presence of the One Connect box (only the Mini LED UHD 8K and Oled S95D UHD 4K series benefit from it in 2024) and which allows all connections from the sources to the TV to be remote, leaving only one visible single cable. Splendid.

Precision, the One Connect box of the Samsung QN800D 8K Ultra HD TVs is identical to that of last year's QN800C. If it does not benefit from the drastic slimming treatment carried out for the One Connect of the QN900D, it offers a contained size, especially once “clipped” on the TV stand. Of course, it can also be moved to be placed near audio-video sources, for example.

The Infinity Screen design of the Samsung 8K Neo QLED TVs is still in place with the screen being extremely thin, 18 millimeters.

Samsung QN800D, main specifications££££

In terms of specifications, the Samsung QN800D Ultra HD 8K QLED TVs integrate a native 10-bit and 120 Hz LCD panel. Concerning the panel, we do not know if the 2024 references are of VA nature as in 2022 or IPS as in 2023 (answer later). The QN800D diffusers also benefit from the Neural Quantum NQ8 AI Gen2 processor. Less powerful on the chip embedded in the QN900D, it nevertheless remains the second most powerful processor ever offered by the brand with many improved algorithms: 8K AI Upscaling or AI Motion Enhancer for example. We can also point out the Neo Quantum HDR 8K+.

As for the 2021, 2022 and 2023 televisions, this mixes Machine Learning process and Deep Learning process. 256 neural modules in 2024 are at work for further improved image quality, compared to 64 in 2023, 20 in 2022 and 16 in 2021. As a reminder, the Deep Learning process is based on a neural model, i.e. without human intervention (contrary to Machine Learning) in learning the processor. This decides alone the necessary developments in the image processing algorithms to find optimum quality starting from a degraded display.

For the rest, we find the AI Real Depth Enhancer algorithm intended to accentuate the relief of the image by optimizing the contrast between the foreground of the image which concentrates the moving objects or the action and background.

Samsung QN800D, Quantum Matrix Technology Pro backlighting ££££

Concerning the quality of blacks displayed on the screen, the new Mini LED backlighting system developed by the brand's engineers called Quantum Matrix Technology Pro is the part. Compared to last year, the latter includes additional zones, without further details. In fact, Samsung no longer communicates the number of zones of these diffusers…

The electrical management of each zone of the backlighting system and that of light leaks have been optimized on the 2024 models. This allows fine distribution of the quantity of current sent to each of the LEDs (Local Power Distribution ) which, combined with internal 14-bit grayscale upsampling, provides more precise color gradation and a wider palette. This also allows tone-on-tone images to reveal many additional details for richer textures and increased readability of the image.

The final result offers even more abysmal rendering of blacks and even brighter whites, on very small surfaces, for increased brilliance effects. Regarding light leaks, their perfect management results in eliminating the Blooming phenomenon. These are more than interesting elements for a new HDR experience, knowing that the QN800D screens manage HDR10, HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive and HDR HLG. Also note, the Auto HDR Remastering mode to convert an SDR signal into HDR.

Of course, LCD panels with an extremely low reflectance index (reflections are almost non-existent) and a wide viewing angle, inaugurated in 2019, are still in place in 2024, and that's a very good thing as its effectiveness amazes us every year.

Samsung QN800D, Adaptive Sound Pro, AVA Pro, OTS+ and Dolby Atmos££££

The sound section is also in the spotlight on Samsung QN800D TVs with the on-board OTS+ process. This has a total of twelve speakers placed at the rear of the screen (4.2.2 system) for a total power delivered of 70 W via a configuration adapted to the reproduction of Dolby Atmos. The sound is broadcast according to a dispersion grid which runs all around the screen (see photo below). The OTS+ system aims to “stick” the sound of objects to their movement in the image for better realism.

Associated with a Samsung Q-Series soundbar, the TV's processor is used to calibrate it according to the listening room. A succession of sound messages is delivered and their frequency response, their echo and the return speed are analyzed to carry out the optimum acoustic treatment.

For the rest, we find the Q-Symphony function. The latter always consists, in the presence of a Samsung Q-Series 2020/2021/2022/2023/2024 soundbar connected, of taking advantage of the television speakers in addition to those of the soundbar to magnify the sound reproduction, its scale and spatialization. Namely, if the soundbar is connected wirelessly to the television (via Wi-Fi), management of Dolby Atmos soundtracks is of course provided wirelessly too.

The Adaptive Sound Pro function is still capable of adapting the TV's audio settings in real time depending on the image displayed, now taking into account the listening room. The AVA Pro (Active Voice Amplifier) function is also always included, intended to cover new noise in the TV environment automatically. For example that of a kettle or a vacuum cleaner which will be covered by an increase in volume managed directly by the TV. Don't panic, the TV lowers the sound, always automatically, when the noise stops.

Samsung QN800D, Multiview function££££

The Samsung QN800D 8K Ultra HD QLED TVs offer simultaneous display of up to four contents with the MultiView function through as many windows on the screen: the first with the signal from a TV channel or a source connected to the TV, the second with the screen of a user's smartphone, the third coming from a game console and the last with the internet (see photo below). There are 14 display possibilities, ranging from the classic PIP to having four adjacent windows.

2

The HDMI 2.1 standard with eARC, VRR, Freesync Premium Pro, ALLM, 8K/60, HFR 4K/120 and 4K/165 compatibility are, once again, required on the four HDMI inputs. And to activate Mirroring mode between a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and a Samsung QN800D TV, using the Tap View function, simply touch the second with the first and that's it. Precision, even if it is still not officially mentioned, G-Sync compatibility should also be available in 2024, as on the 2022/2023 ranges.

3

Samsung QN800D, ultra-thin One Connect case££££

As already mentioned, in 2024, the One Connect case is remarkably thin. To the point of blending in with the TV stand (see photos above) once clipped on it, for perfect discretion. And like previous years, the One Connect can be moved away from the screen (2.5 m cable supplied) for better ergonomics of the audio-video installation (the sources can thus be placed/stored in a location other than the television for total freedom of arrangement with, for example, wall mounting of the screen). Beautiful work.

4

Samsung QN800D and Tizen 8, focus on profile management and customization of the interface££££

Also on the program for Samsung QN800D TVs, the Tizen 8.0 operating system. Among the new features, profile management (associated with the accounts of the members of a household) allowing the television interface to be personalized according to each person's wishes, without forgetting content recommendations linked to the tastes of each person (see. photo below). On the screen appear three new tabs superimposed on the main image, For you, Direct and Apps. The first saves the last used source(s) and recommended content. The second provides access to live content and the EPG. The third is none other than the application store. Namely, in 2024, the recommendations concern audiovideo content but also video games (Gaming Hub) and works of art (Art Store).

5

Samsung QN800D and Tizen 8, new Daily+ and Now+££££ menus

In the vertical navigation bar on the left of the interface, a new menu called Daily+ appears. This gives direct access to the SmartThings Dashboard (to easily and quickly connect and control Smart Home devices in the home), and to Workspace mode to easily connect to a remote PC or to Microsoft 365 in order to have a workstation. teleworking directly via the television.

6

For its part, the Now+ service displays generic widgets on the screen (weather, traffic, news, etc.) or the security camera(s), but also information linked to the different members (account) of the home: birthdays, appointments... Everything is of course accessible via voice command.

TV Samsung QN800D, Game Bar 2024 more immersive££££

In 2024, the Game Bar 2024 of Samsung Smart TVs evolves for increased immersion of the player in the action. Thus, the TV automatically selected the appropriate audio-video channels depending on the nature of the game displayed: RPG, Sports, FPS, RTS. If in the presence of a football game, the atmospheres are favored, with an FPS, the emphasis is placed on the sound details which could betray the presence or movement of an enemy. Likewise, the minimap is automatically detected and can be placed on the screen as desired.

7For the rest, new Cloud Gaming services have been added to the Samsung Gaming Hub, Luna and Bosteroïds, and the most used games are now accessible directly from the TV home page. As a reminder, Samsung has just formalized the Designed for Samsung Gaming Hub label.

Samsung QN800D and Tizen 8.0, Amazon Alexa and Bixby££££

In 2024, the Tizen 8.0 interface offers for all internet service providers an IP TV application allowing you to enjoy it directly from a Samsung Smart TV, thus eliminating the need for a TV decoder (see our Samsung Smart TV news 2018 to 2022, focus on TV boxes dematerialized).

The Bixby voice assistant is still available, the same for Amazon Alexa but not Google Assistant (see our Samsung Smart TV news, Google Assistant soon to be unavailable…). And it is possible to easily switch from one to the other via the menu. Likewise, the Samsung QN800D series is compatible with the AV1 codec. On the connectivity menu, we should mention the Wi-Fi 6e function (8K required), Bluetooth and AirPlay 2 compatibility plus numerous communication features or the possibility of working on these Microsoft documents via the Cloud on the TV screen.

8

Samsung QN800D and Tizen 8.0, SmartThings IoT platform££££

Of course, the SmartThings function is still there. The group's IoT (Internet of Things) platform is compatible with Android/iOS and with several hundred devices from other brands (Arlo-type surveillance cameras, Amazon Echo or Google Home-type smart speakers, Philips Hue-type connected lights, connected lock…).

Samsung Smart TVs are thus capable of integrating into the most current interactive ecosystems with a major advantage, directly linked to their DNA, the possibility of displaying a lot of information on their screen: the person's face who has just rang the front door, the contents of the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator, notifications from the robot vacuum cleaner or even the washing machine when the cleaning or washing cycle is finished. The television thus becomes the preferred interface for accessing the functionalities offered by Smart Home equipment.

9

We can also cite the Expert Calibration functionality (see our CES 22 news > Neo QLED TV Samsung 2022, Intelligent Calibration via Samsung Galaxy or iPhone) and a remote control still solar but much more compact and capable, still in 2024, to be recharged by RF (radio frequency). Thus, the zappette takes advantage of your box's Wi-Fi to recharge itself constantly.
