HEVC codec, here to stay

Despite competition from the “new kid” AV1, the well-established HEVC remains the codec of choice for the streaming industry.

Supported by big names in the industry, the AV1 compression/decompression system (or codec) aims to replace the current HEVC, but the latter remains the preferred codec for the streaming industry, reports Futuresource. , commissioned by mobile video research and development company InterDigital (via Advanced Television).

HEVC, 10 billion compatible devices in 2030?

Thus HEVC is used by Prime Video, Apple TV+, Netflix, Hulu, Disney, NBC, Paramount and Warner Bros to deliver their content, the codec being praised for its bandwidth efficiency. While 2023 is expected to be an important transition point, where the number of Ultra HD subscriptions is expected to exceed HD ones, HEVC remains a technology of choice. By 2030, the number of HEVC-compatible devices worldwide would reach 10 billion.

A word to Rajesh Pankaj, CTO of InterDigital

“The greater efficiency of the HEVC codec, compared to its predecessor AVC, means it offers multiple advantages in the video ecosystem,” said Rajesh Pankaj, CTO of InterDigital. HEVC delivers improved quality for consumers without increasing data and bandwidth requirements, helping to speed up video transfer and optimize cloud storage costs for streaming service providers.”
