Kef R series, Hi-Fi/Home Cinema speaker with metamaterial sauce

The British manufacturer announced a few weeks ago the renewal of its R series, the heart of its speaker range and located between the Q and Reference series, respectively the most affordable and the most upscale if we except the exclusive Blade and Muon. Presentation.

The time has come for the R series for 2023, Kef speakers, to incorporate the latest technological development developed by the brand, namely the exclusive MAT process (for Metamaterial Absorption Technology, see below).

Kef R Series speakers, seven Hi-Fi/Home Cinema references

The R 2023 series has seven references, the three column loudspeakers Kef R11 Meta, Kef R7 Meta and Kef R5 Meta, the Kef R3 Meta bookshelf loudspeaker, the two central Kef R6 Meta and Kef R2 Meta and the effects Pitch Kef R8 Meta.

They all feature the same 12th generation Uni-Q driver (tweeter and coaxial midrange) boosted with MAT technology for a consistent sound signature. The latter is associated with one or two 130 mm boomers (on the R2 Meta, R5 Meta) and up to four 165 mm boomers (on the R3 Meta, R6 Meta, R7 Meta and R11 Meta). The latter is very similar to the one that fitted the previous range of Kef Series R loudspeakers. benefit from a closed, bass-reflex load for the other references.

Kef R Series speakers, zoom on Meta technology

As a reminder, the exclusive MAT process (for Metamaterial Absorption Technology) materializes in the form of a complex labyrinthine structure in relief where the channels act as an acoustic black hole absorbing 99% of the unwanted sounds radiating at the back of the top Uni-Q coaxial speaker, up from 60% previously. Thus, the distortion is virtually eliminated (THD at 0.07%) and the transparency increased. It should be noted that the MAT speaker also provides a better frequency response (+40%). Finally, it delivers perfectly and consistently smooth highs that are clear and precise at any volume.

Other developments within the Kef Series R loudspeakers include a new crossover design and shortening of the path of travel to further improve the sound, a flexible decoupling chassis to annihilate unwanted vibrations. Namely, the foot Kef S
